Ticket Gates at stations

New ticket gates are being installed
Starting this spring, we’re installing new ticket gates at a number of our stations. Quick and easy to use, the gates will improve security and discourage anti-social behaviour as everyone will need a ticket to get to the platforms – so paying customers will no longer be subsidising those that don’t.
What’s more, to make travel simpler for you, the new gates will also allow us to offer e-tickets, so saving you time as you can print your ticket before setting off for the station. The gates can read the magnetic strip on paper tickets or scan the bar-code on e-tickets. After you’ve passed through the gate, you can retrieve your ticket and retain it until you reach your destination.
At the cutting edge of design, the gates are wide enough to allow easy and fast access for everyone including passengers with large luggage, pushchairs or wheelchairs. And the gates will only operate when they’re managed by a member of staff. If, in the unlikely event there is no-one available, the gates will be left open.
The first stations to benefit from the new gates will be Grantham and Darlington with work beginning in spring. The gates should be operational by early summer. Following this, new gates will then be installed at Durham, Newcastle, Newark Northgate and York.
